Tin Type Gal Rallies to Take Boiling Springs

Trainer Graham Motion decided to scratch Tin Type Gal from the July 22 Lake George Stakes (gr. IIT) at Saratoga Race Course in favor of the July 24 Boiling Springs Stakes (gr. IIIT), and the move paid off when the Tapit   filly overcame traffic entering the stretch to win the Monmouth Park fixture. 

Owned and bred in Kentucky by My Meadowview Farm, Tin Type Gal, under Trevor McCarthy, found room along the rail when the field turned for home, quickly moved from last to second in the field of seven 3-year-old fillies, and got the best of favored Galileo's Song by a neck in 1:47.71 for 1 1/8 miles on a course rated firm. She paid $5.80 to win as the second choice.

"She is a classy filly," Motion said. "My concern last time was that she was so far out of it and couldn't make up that much ground. She was toward the back today, but she wasn't too far off the lead. This seemed like a logical spot for her. I just wanted to get this one under my belt."

"She popped out of the gate well and I just wanted to get her comfortable," McCarthy said. "She settled nicely near the back. I got a little anxious turning for home, but when the spot opened at the rail she just shot through there. I tapped her on the shoulder just a couple of times and every time I asked her she just gave me more. She sure showed her class today."

Tin Type Gal, out of the Deputy Minister mare Miss Shop, finished an even fifth in her only other start of the year June 19 in the Wild Applause Stakes at Belmont Park. Last year the filly won the Miss Grillo Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Belmont after her maiden-breaker on the grass at Saratoga.

Galileo's Song, an entry-level allowance winner in her last start, finished 2 1/4 lengths ahead of Verbouwen in third. Tin Type Gal has now earned $233,199 on a record of three wins in five starts.
