Jockey Chris Landeros won his 1,000th race Sept. 7 when he guided Major Marvel to victory in the $100,000 Unbridled Stakes at Harrah's Louisiana Downs.

Major Marvel, racing for trainer Mike Maker and owners Ken and Sarah Ramsey, vied between foes to get the lead mid-stretch in the 1 1/16-mile turf test and dug in late to edge favored String King by a neck. The second choice in a field of six at odds of 2-1, the 7-year-old Bernstein gelding was timed in 1:41 flat over firm going and returned $6.80 to win.

A native of San Mateo, Calif., Landeros turned 25 in July. He began his riding career at Turf Paradise at the age of 17. After riding in California for a spell, he relocated to the southwest in 2009 and is currently based at Remington Park.

His biggest win to date was aboard Schramsberg in the 2011 John B. Connally Turf Handicap (gr. IIT) at Sam Houston Race Park. He won riding titles at Lone Star Park in 2009 and 2010.

According to Equibase, Landeros has had 5,855 mounts through Sept. 7 with total purse earnings of $15,422,618. In addition to his victories, he has 852 seconds and 763 third-place finishes.
