Sorrento Draws Unique Field at Del Mar

Description:

Two stakes-placed fillies, a recent maiden winner, and three maidens are entered to go to the gate in the $200,000 Sorrento Stakes (gr. II) Aug. 6 at Del Mar.

The fillies with stakes experience both drew inside. Mojallai Stables' Unforgivable U, a daughter of Langfuhr   trained by Jeff Bonde, gets the rail following a third-place performance in the Juan Gonzalez Memorial Stakes at Pleasanton, where she dueled for the lead as the 2-1 favorite and only finished a length behind winner Only You Babe.

Peter Cantrell's Miss Southern Miss was also favored in her stakes debut, the Landaluce July 9 at Santa Anita Park, but the More Than Ready   filly trained by Keith Desormeaux was bested by 2 3/4 lengths by second choice Theonewewaitedfor.

The 6 1/2-furlong Sorrento distance will be unfamiliar to all six entrants. The two stakes-placed fillies have only raced at 5 1/2 furlongs or shorter, as has maiden runner-up Champagne Room, the Broken Vow   filly trained by Peter Eurton who finished second as the 2-1 favorite after breaking from the rail in her first start at Del Mar July 16.

Impressive last-out winner Auntjenn broke her maiden for trainer Kristin Mulhall July 23 by 6 1/2 lengths at six furlongs, but Ciao Bella Rosa and Rooms are both dialing back from a mile race on the turf July 29, just a week prior to the Sorrento. Ciao Bella Rosa, a Kitten's Joy filly trained by Peter Miller, closed from seventh to finish third in the grass race—also her debut—while Rooms, a Giant's Causeway filly conditioned by George Papaprodromou, set the pace and tired to finish seventh in the same race.
