Yoshida Katsumi's Sobradora Inc changed continents and hadn't raced since December, but remained undefeated Aug. 6 at Del Mar with a victory in the $75,000 Osunitas Stakes.
The Include filly, in her first start for trainer Simon Callaghan following four wins in her native Argentina—including two group I victories—trailed the field of eight turning for home in the 1 1/16-mile grass test, rallied widest of all, and edged U.S. graded winners Prize Exhibit and Elektrum at the wire.
Under jockey Rafael Bejarano, the 4-year-old filly patiently raced near the back of the pack as fellow multiple South American group I winner Juno set the pace with swift fractions of :22.60, :46.12, and 1:10.48 through six furlongs.
Havanna Belle took command at the top of the stretch as Juno faded, but Elektrum hit the front soon after, while Prize Exhibit battled traffic inside and Sobradora Inc surged in the clear on the outside to win by about a half-length. She finished off the 1 1/16 miles in 1:40.86.
The sky appears to be the limit for the filly, who won the Enrique Acebal (Arg-I) and Copa de Plata (Arg-I), both at 1 1/4 miles on the turf late in 2015 before shipping to North America
"Her works weren't super quick, but we expected her to be right there. But we were a bit nervous about the track being a bit speed-favoring," said Callaghan, who indicated he will likely take his time with the filly and point her to the 1 1/4-mile Rodeo Drive (gr. IT) at Santa Anita Park in late September. "I think she's definitely going to be a filly that's better going farther."
Off at 9-1, the winner paid $20.40, $11.40, and $5.80 across the board. Prize Exhibit, who won a photo for second, paid $9.20 and $4.80. Elektrum delivered $2.80 to show.
