On what promises to be a big night for Gainesway stallion Tapit , one of his sons was the first to seven figures during the Aug. 9 second session of the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga selected yearling sale when purchased by Stonestreet and Coolmore for $1.25 million.
Consigned by Gainesway as Hip 140, the beautiful gray is a full brother to graded-placed Royal Obsession. The colt, bred in Kentucky by Marbat, is out of the winning Tiznow mare Rote and has a female family loaded with stakes winners, including grade I winner Magnificent Song under the second dam.
Royal Obsession twice sold at public auction for seven figures, the first time bought by Regis Farms for $1 million at the Saratoga auction in 2014. At the Regis dispersal at the 2015 Keeneland November sale, the filly was purchased by Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings for $1.15 million.
"He's a beautiful Tapit; as far as Tapits go, he's one of the best ones I've ever seen," said Stonestreet bloodstock adviser John Moynihan, who signed the ticket. "We hope to have a lot of luck with him. He's probably one of the two best horses in the sale.
"He's completely different from Royal Obsession. She is big and lanky; this horse has a look of more muscle. He's a little more tighter, he looks like he'll be early. I actually prefer him physically to her."
Stonestreet and Coolmore partnered for the $950,000 top-priced Pioneerof the Nile —Ocean Goddess colt at the Aug. 8 first session. Moynihan said Stonestreet has always done partnerships.
"You get to spread your risk a little and you don't have a much exposure, and if it works out to be great, it's great for everybody," he added. "We all know if it doesn't work out, it lessens your exposure by half. So we'll take a shot.
Moynihan said the Tapit colt will go to the training center in Ocala and they would "figure out the rest of it later."
