The appetite for Tapit yearlings continued Aug. 9 at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale when a half brother to four-time grade I winner Princess of Sylmar was sold to China Horse Club for $800,000.
The colt, consigned by Hunter Valley Farm as Hip 164, was purchased by that operation as a weanling at last year’s Keeneland November breeding stock sale for $500,000.
Princess of Sylmar was sold at the 2014 Fasig-Tipton November breeding stock for a sale-topping $3.1 million.
"We thought if there was such a thing as value in a half-a-million-dollar weanling, he was it," said Hunter Valley partner Fergus Galvin. "He has great balance and moves very well."
Michael Wallace of China Horse Club said they were keen to get the colt.
"(He's) powerful and good on the shank," he said. "Hunter Valley has done a great job with him. We're really excited to get a horse like him.
"There were things we saw glimpses of what we liked—good mind, handled the week well. He didn't put a foot out of line, and we're) really happy to get him."
Wallace said he thought the top of the market might have been a little bit stronger.
"It seems that the buyers are getting a little more selective, you're seeing more partnerships, which is probably narrowing focus," he said.
