First Winner for Indiana Stallion Sangaree

Indiana-based stallion Sangaree   saw his first winner Aug. 11, when Sung delivered a front-running victory in a maiden special weight race at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino.

Sangaree, an 11-year-old son of Awesome Again  , stood the 2016 season for $1,500 at R Star Stallions in Anderson. Sangaree won the 2010 Joe Hernandez Stakes at Santa Anita Park and placed in six other stakes, including a second-place finish in the 2010 Triple Bend Handicap (gr. I) at Hollywood Park.

Bred by Stonerside Stable and campaigned by Godolphin Racing, Sangaree won or placed in stakes at age 5, 6, and 7. He won races from 6 1/2 furlongs to 1 1/16 miles, took four of 26 starts, and earned $365,710. Bred in Kentucky, Sangaree is out of grade III-placed Mari's Book mare Mari's Sheba, who also produced muliple grade I winner Congaree  .

A homebred for Amy and Jim Elliott, Sung drew off in the stretch during Friday's eighth race, which was restricted to Indiana-breds sired by registered Indiana stallions. A gelding out of the Gone West mare Goin for the Green, Sung completed the 5 1/2-furlong race in 1:04.42 on a fast track.

Trained by Barbara McBride, Sung was guided to victory by Fernando De La Cruz.
