'Chrome' Works in 1:00 1/5

California Chrome  's preparation toward the Aug. 20 TVG Pacific Classic (gr. I) continued Aug. 14 with the son of Lucky Pulpit   working five furlongs in a bullet 1:00 1/5 at Los Alamitos. Exercise rider Dihigi Gladney was aboard.

"It went according to plan," said trainer Art Sherman. "It was nice—he was just cruising, and I liked the way he came back. He went out early and he was the first one out on the track. That was good; it is supposed to get warm today."

The move, one of only five at the trip, was "just what we were looking for," according to Alan Sherman, son and assistant of trainer Art Sherman. "He worked great; we're happy. I caught him in 1:00 flat.

"He's been a beast," Alan Sherman continued. "He's doing better than he was before the (Dubai) World Cup (UAE-I)."

California Chrome, out of the Not For Love mare Love the Chase, is the richest North American-based runner of all-time with $12,652,650 in earnings. He's four for four this year with victories in the San Pasqual Stakes (gr. II) at Santa Anita in January,  a handicap race and the Dubai World Cup Sponsored by Emirates Airline (UAE-I) in Dubai, and the San Diego Handicap (gr. II) July 23.

As for Del Mar's Pacific Classic that will likely include last year's winner, Beholder, "there'll be a lot of good horses," said Alan Sherman. "It should be one of the best races of the year."

"It's exciting and it should be good for racing," Art Sherman added. "They should have a big crowd. There'll be a lot of Beholder fans and a lot of Chromies."

Art Sherman said California Chrome will ship from Los Al to Del Mar Aug. 15.
