Zenyatta's Full Brother Breaks Maiden

De Coronado, a 3-year-old full brother of superstar mare Zenyatta, drastically cut back in distance for his second start and broke his maiden Aug. 14 at Dundalk in Ireland.
Owned by Coolmore and partners and trained by Aidan O'Brien, Kentucky-bred De Coronado won the one-mile maiden race by a half length, but his connections had to wait out a stewards' inquiry into possible interference in the stretch with runner-up Balcony. The result, however, was allowed to stand.
Donnacha O'Brien settled De Coronado at the back of the field and advanced with him to press front-runner Balcony a quarter mile out. The colt grabbed the lead nearing the final eighth of a mile, where he drifted left, but prevailed..
De Coronado made his debut going 1 1/2 miles July 16 at the Curragh, finishing ninth. In Sunday's race, he covered the mile in 1:38.65 on the all-weather surface.
"He was off the bridle all the way the last day but travelled well into the race today," Donnacha O'Brien told the Irish Times. "He's going to be a nice horse."
By Street Cry out of the winning Kris S mare Vertigineux, De Coronado was bred by Coolmore breeding entity Orpendale, Chelston, and Wynatt. He is also a half brother to multiple grade I winner Balance and stakes winner Where's Bailey, dam of two-time Yellow Ribbon (gr. II) winner She's Not Here, among six winners overall from his dam.
Zenyatta, 2010 Horse of the Year and three-time champion older female, won 19 of her 20 starts. Her only loss came in her final race, the 2010 Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I), in which she was second to that year's champion older male, Blame.
