City Zip Colt Tops Northern California Sale

A yearling colt by City Zip   was purchased by Bob Hess Jr. for $50,000 to top the Aug. 16 Northern California yearling and horses of racing age sale. The sale at the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton was the 13th presented in Northern California by the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association in its current format.

The sale-topper, out of the stakes-placed Runaway Groom mare Mama Ruth, was bred in Arizona by H & E Ranch and is a full brother to Tosheen, who has earned $150,050. Mama Ruth is a half sister to multiple stakes winner Double Affair, who tallied 20 wins and earned $596,090 racing to age 11.

The second-highest price of $47,000 was paid by Terry Knight for a California-bred bay colt by Acclamation out of the stakes-winning Jump Start mare North Freeway. Consigned by Fairview, the colt was bred by Thomas Bachman.

The top consignor for the sale for the second consecutive year was Woodbridge Farm, with 24 horses sold for gross receipts of $177,000. The top buyer was Jeff Bonde, who purchased five for $132,000.

CTBA reported 128 yearlings sold for $947,400, an average price of $7,402, and eight horses of racing age changed hands for a total of $80,800.

Last year, 117 yearlings averaged $11,537 on gross receipts of $1,349,800, and 10 horses of racing age totaled $88,700.
