Robbin Martens' Ready Itaglio, a 3-year-old Kentucky-bred by Indygo Shiner, rallied from next-to-last in a 12-horse field to win the $150,000 Canadian Derby (Can-III) Aug. 20 at Northlands Park in Alberta.
Ridden by Shamaree Muir for trainer Amber Meyaard, Ready Intaglio, a tepid 7-2 favorite, defeated 13-1 Solve (Flatter ) by three-quarters of a length in 2:19.16 for 1 3/8 miles on a dirt track rated fast. The Accuser (Flower Alley) finished another three-quarters of a length back in third in the open stakes for 3-year-olds.
Ready Intaglio, out of the More Than Ready mare Mama Maxine and bred by Bo Hirsch, entered the Canadian Derby off of back-to-back stakes victories at Northlands at one mile and 1 1/16 miles. The colt spent last winter in Arizona at Turf Paradise, where he finished third in Lost in the Fog Juvenile Stakes and fourth in the Tempe Handicap on the grass.
Ready Intaglio has six wins in 16 starts. He's two-for-two for Meyaard, who took over training from Eurico Martens after the colt's third-place finish in the Western Canada Handicap in his first 2016 start at Northlands in late May. He broke his maiden at 2 last year at the Alberta racetrack.
Northlands reported total pari-mutuel handle of $1,666,083 for its Aug. 20 Derby program.
