Del Mar Opening Day Fashion on a Budget

Description:

Opening Day at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club is the West Coast’s ultimate see-and-be-seen event of the summer, so it’s important to feel your best when heading out for the first day of racing where the surf meets the turf! I’m here to help you do that while sticking to a budget – after all, while I love dressing up to go to the track, it’s important to be able to have a little extra cash in your pocket when you’re there so you can gamble and have cocktails, too!
When I’m dressing on a budget, I try to remember that paying attention to the little details of a look can make the whole outfit look much more costly than it is. For example: do your shoes have silver or gold buckles? Whatever the answer, make sure that the hardware on your purse and the metal of your jewelry also incorporates that color; that makes the whole ensemble come together as much more polished and refined.
With that behind us, here are five looks I’ve put together that will be perfect for Del Mar’s Opening Day:

I love the beach-inspired colors of this $25 strapless dress from Body Central. I paired it with a turquoise wide-brimmed hat for $28 from JC Penney as well as a fab pair of Bebe heels for $40. Add a statement necklace ($35, shoptiques.com) and a cuff ($12, BooHoo.com) plus a $35 Sole Society bag and you have a complete look for $175.

Southern California is the home of rockabilly, and I love the throwback glamour of that culture. This vintage-inspired sailor dress is just $11 from Amazon (how is that possible?) and I coupled it with a pair of Vince Camuto Carlii red Mary Janes for $30. I love this white satchel for $30 from Accessorize.com as well as the beautiful bracelet watch ($35, Charter Club.) Top it all off with a white flower hair clip for $5 from mydivascloset.com, a pop of bright red lipstick ($4.20, Nasty Gal) and some liquid eyeliner for $3 from Eyes Lips Face and you have a complete look for just $118.20.

14DelMarOpen03 by penelopemiller featuring a zara footwear
I must have this dress. I love everything about it: the sleeves, the collar, and especially the print. It’s a bit more expensive at $82 from Oasis.AndOtherBrands.com, but I think it’s worth it. I paired it with two-tone pumps from Zara for $50 and a wonderful yellow and white handbag from Go Jane for $38. Add a navy fascinator ($49, Accessorize.com) and a white bangle from Bauble Bar for $34 and you’re in business for $253.

14DelMarOpen04 by penelopemiller featuring kate spade jewelry
This navy-and-white striped maxi dress ($50, Akira) is perfect for a day of surfside racing; it lends itself perfectly to some $45 cognac wedges from ModCloth and a hobo bag for $21 from Aldo. Add a geometric cuff bracelet for $34 from Humble Chic, a pair of $7.95 shades from Bebe plus Kate Spade earrings with the essential pop of color for $48 and you’re off to the races for $205.95.

Our last look incorporates the tribal trend that’s huge this summer with a $20 textured skirt from BooHoo.com. I coupled it with a seafoam blouse with cutouts on the back for $17 from Body Central, then added some Madden Girl flat sandals for $50. The yellow purse ($50, Aldo) has a metallic chain that mimics the top strap of the sandals, and to finish off the look I chose an oversized pair of sunglasses for $4.98 from Body Central. The entire ensemble comes together for just $141.98. That leaves plenty of extra cash for cocktails and betting – what could be better than that when you’re at fabulous Del Mar?
