Midshipman Filly Tops Record-Grossing MN Sale

Description:

The Minnesota Thoroughbred Association enjoyed a record gross for its yearling sale Aug. 22 as total receipts reached $517,350, led by an auction-topping Midshipman   filly for $50,000.

There were 49 horses sold from 62 Minnesota-breds offered, with the gross surpassing the previous record of $454,100 set in 2014, when 43 horses changed hands. The total receipts were up 67% from last year's sale, at which 40 horses sold for $310,150.

The average price was a near-record $10,558, just $2 short of the 2014 record of $10,560 and up 43% from the 2015 auction. The median was $6,500, the highest since 2002 and up 56.6% compared with last year.

Agent Dove Hill Farm's sale-topping Midshipman filly, bred by Richard Bremer and Cheryl Sprick, was bought by Barry and Joni Butzow of Eden Prairie, Minn. She is the first foal out of the winning Lion Heart mare Lion Cub, a daughter of High Margin, a listed stakes winner at Santa Anita Park. The family includes several graded stakes winners, including Kaweah Princess, Closeout, Capital Request, and Family Meeting.

The Butzows, who also bought a Matt's Broken Vow colt for $10,000, topped the buyers list with a total expenditure of $60,000.

The sale's top consignor was Wood-Mere Farm, with six horses sold for $122,500, including an Algorithms  —I Know You Know (Officer) colt bought by St. Paul resident Dale Schenian for $34,000, the sale's second-highest price.
