Multiple stakes winners Rovenna and Clenor top a field of 11 3-year-old fillies entered for the June 28 Senorita Stakes (gr. IIIT), among the Santa Anita Park summer stakes previously run at the closed Betfair Hollywood Park.
Donald R. Dizney's California homebred Rovenna has four wins and four placings to her credit in nine starts and earned $397,760 for trainer Michael Machowsky. The daughter of Vronsky who returned to the West Coast after breaking her maiden at Calder Casino & Race Course last year comes into the Senorita on a three-race win streak that includes the Evening Jewel Stakes and Melair Stakes, both at Santa Anita.
Rovenna breaks from the 9 post under regular rider Victor Espinoza.
An Irish-bred daughter of Oratorio, Clenor last year broke her maiden and captured the Oak Tree Juvenile Fillies Turf at Del Mar and the Surfer Girl at Santa Anita in her first three starts in the U.S. for a partnership that includes Great Friends Stable, Robert Cseplo, and Steve Keh. Bred by Mrs. Lucy Stack, the filly placed third in a group III stake in three winless starts in her native country while trained by Tommy Stack for Mrs. John Magnier and Peter Piller.
Clenor sustained her first loss in the U.S. in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (gr. IT), finishing eighth after trailing by as much as 10 lengths in the 14-horse field. She finished the season when third in the $100,000 Miesque Stakes (gr. IIIT) Nov. 30 at Hollywood Park. In her lone start of 2014, Clenor rallied along the rail to finish second in the May 2 Ultrafleet Stakes at Santa Anita.
The only two other stakes winners in the Senorita field are Miss Machiavelli, who starts from the rail under jockey Kent Desormeaux, and Sushi Empire, who has the services of Corey Nakatani.
A daughter of Artie Schiller bred in Kentucky by Shane Doyle and Penny McCarthy, Miss Machiavelli was purchased by Matthew W. Bryan for $20,000 from the Taylor Made Sales Agency consignment to the 2012 Keeneland September yearling sale. Trained by J. Kent Desormeaux for lessee Big Chief Racing, the filly won the Pike Place Dancer Stakes at Golden Gate Fields as the even-money favorite to conclude her juvenile season. In her 2014 debut, Miss Machiavelli ran seventh in the Edgewood Stakes on the May 2 Kentucky Oaks card at Churchill Downs and was sent to Arlington Park for an unplaced effort on Polytrack in an allowance/optional claiming event.
Sushi Empire, trained by Eoin Harty, was bred in Kentucky by Eugene Melnyk and purchased by Classic Bloodstock, agent for Wounded Warrior Stable, for $165,000 from the Taylor Made consignment to the same Keeneland sale that produced Miss Machiavelli. In her lone victory to date from nine starts, the daughter of Empire Maker broke her maiden in stakes company when she won the Blue Norther Stakes at Santa Anita on Jan. 1 this year. She is coming off a third-place finish in the Ultrafleet Stakes.
