Racing Australia's chief executive officer Peter McGauran Aug. 25 announced that he will not seek to renew his contract of employment upon its expiration in December.
McGauran's announcement comes amid a backlash from Australian breeders over Racing Australia's sweeping new regulations that bring them under the control of racing administrators.
Racing Australia said in a release that McGauran has accepted a senior corporate position, details of which will become public at a later date. Moreover, he will assume a number of non-executive directorships precluded by his current position.
"The board accepts Peter's resignation with regret, but understands the professional direction he now wishes to chart," the release said. "Peter has been the CEO of Racing Australia for the last 4 1/2 years, which has been a period of major reform and development at the national level."
John Messara, the chairman of Racing Australia who owns Arrowfield Stud, said he worked closely with McGauran "and well know the commitment he brought to a difficult role. The board will consider a replacement process at its September board meeting."
