Bill and Corinne Heiligbrodt’s Reckling graduated in his second career start, going wire-to-wire to win the first race on the Travers Day card at Saratoga Race Course Aug. 27.
Trained by Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen, the 2-year-old son of Dialed In was initially pursued by expensive juvenile purchase Monaco, and then chased by longshot Kid Perfect to get the quarter mile in :22.65. Reckling and jockey Ricardo Santana Jr. continued to make all the pace and held off a challenge from Mo Town and Javier Castellano to win by 1 1/4 lengths. Mo Town, who was bumped soundly at the break, held second, followed by Souper Catch.
Reckling completed six furlongs in the $93,000 maiden special weight in 1:10.37.
Monaco, a son of Uncle Mo purchased for $1.3 million earlier this year, finished sixth in his first start for Mike Repole's Repole Stable and the Coolmore Stud connections of Michael Tabor, Susan Magnier, and Derrick Smith.
Produced from the Distorted Humor mare Cash Reserve, Reckling is a son of Dialed In, the second-leading first-crop sire (through Aug. 26). Dialed In stands at Darby Dan Farm near Lexington, where his 2016 fee was $7,500.
Bred by Dixiana Farm, Reckling was purchased by the Heiligbrodts for $70,000 from the Lane’s End consignment to the 2015 Keeneland January sale and was pinhooked into this year’s Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s April 2-year-olds in training sale where he was bought back for $75,000.
Reckling finished second in his career debut July 30 at Saratoga.
