Willy Vlautin is the author of four novels and the former lead singer for the Portland, Ore., alt-country band Richmond Fontaine. His third novel, “Lean on Pete,” was written in 2010. It’s set at Portland Meadows racetrack and follows a young boy who works on the backstretch who falls for a horse and whisks him away to freedom. The book won two Oregon Book Awards — the Ken Kesey Award for Fiction and a new Readers’ Choice Award — and currently is being made into a feature film starring Steve Buscemi and Chloe Sevigny.
