Washington-based stallion Atta Boy Roy joined the ranks of freshman sires with first black-type winners Aug. 28 when Risque's Legacy cruised gate to wire to capture the Washington Cup Two-Year-Old Filly Stakes on Washington Cup Day at Emerald Downs.
Atta Boy Roy, a grade II winner, stood the 2016 season for $2,000 at Blue Ribbon Farm near Buckley. He is an 11-year-old son of Tribunal out of the stakes-placed Synastry mare Irish Toast, who also produced The Great Face, a Cahill Road half brother to Atta Boy Roy who in 2007 won the state's marqee event, the Longacres Mile (gr. III).
Washington-bred Atta Boy Roy won four stakes, including the 2010 Churchill Downs Stakes (gr. II) and placed in five others, including runner-up finishes in the 2010 and 2011 Aristides Stakes (gr. III) at Churchill Downs.
Karl Krieg homebred Risque's Legacy overpowered her six foes and won by three lengths as the overwhelming 1-5 favorite. She covered six furlongs in 1:11.33 on a fast track for trainer Tom Wenzel to be perfect in her two starts.
"She's just a nice horse, a natural," winning rider Rocco Bowen said of Risque's Legacy, whose dam is the winning Mingun mare Risque Humor. "She has got a lot of natural speed. You just got to let this kind of horse do its thing. You have to stay out of their way. She was fighting me a little bit in the turn, but I just relaxed her and let her do her thing."
