Undefeated Sobradora Inc announced her arrival in the U.S Aug. 7 at Del Mar, where she took the Osunitas Stakes, but will take a significant step up against an accomplished group of turf runners Sept. 4 in the $200,000 John C. Mabee Stakes (gr. IIT).
The 4-year-old Argentinean-bred daughter of Include owned by Yoshida Katsumi closed gamely to win the 1 1/16-mile Osunitas in her first start for trainer Simon Callaghan, following a four-for-four start in her native country, where she won two group I races on grass.
Callaghan said after the Osunitas that Sobradora Inc would do even better stretching out, so the Mabee's 1 1/8 miles should not be a problem.
BALAN: Sobradora Inc Still Unbeaten After U.S. Debut
The Mabee field, on the other hand, is significantly tougher and more experienced than what the filly faced in her first Del Mar start.
Eight of the 12 entered have won a group or graded stakes, including last year's Mabee winner, Elektrum, but none have done so all that recently.
BALAN: Elektrum Makes Grade in Mabee
The most recent graded victress is Hronis Racing's Nancy from Nairobi, who took the May 5 Royal Heroine (gr. IIT) at Santa Anita Park, but fellow graded winners Queen of the Sand, Personal Diary, Finest City, Keri Belle, and Prize Exhibit have all shown they are capable when they fire their best.
Rounding out the field are stakes winners Avenge and Havanna Belle, along with graded stakes-placed Fresh Feline and stakes-placed Gloryzapper.
