Lady Shipman True in Turf Amazon

Lady Shipman's dominance of the turf sprint division continued Sept. 5 with a convincing one-length win in the rich Turf Amazon Stakes at Parx. The one-turn specialist covered the five furlongs in :58.06 as the 3-10 choice against six rivals.

Lady Shipman, with Joel Rosario up, broke sharpest from the gate but soon ceded the lead to 30-1 shot Your Pace or Mine. Sitting right off that one through an opening quarter of :22.94, Lady Shipman eased up to lead through a half in :46.03 before spurting clear in the stretch.

The $120,000 first-place prize of the $200,000 purse is the second-highest of her career and her career earnings now stand at $896,042 on a 13-2-2 mark in 19 starts. Racing for Ranlo Investments, Lady Shipman is trained by Kiaran McLaughlin.

Lady Shipman paid $2.60, $2.10, and $2.10; Everything Lovely, who rallied from fourth for second, paid $2.60 and $2.20. Sunnysammi paid $5 to show. The $2 6-1 exacta paid $6.20.

Lady Shipman is by Midshipman  , out of Sumthingtotalkabt, by Mutakddim. She was bred in Kentucky by Randall Lowe.

This was the seventh start of the year for the 4-year-old filly—all at odds-on—who was coming off a win in Woodbine's Royal North Stakes (Can-IIIT) at six furlongs.

Last year Lady Shipman finished off a stellar campaign with a runner-up performance—by a neck—in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (gr. IT) at Keeneland.

In the $300,000 Turf Monster Stakes (gr. IIIT), 23-1 longshot Doctor J Dub prevailed by a half-length under Sheldon Russell in :58.73. Two Notch Road, at 38-1, was second making for a $943.60 exacta.

The winner took the field wire to wire for Drawing Away Stable and paid $49.80, $21, and $10.60. Two Notch Road paid $30.40 and $14.40 and Pool Winner returned $3.60 to show. Favored Power Alert finished fifth.

Doctor J Dub was the winner earlier this year of the Gulfstream Turf Sprint and was making his 15 start of the year in the Turf Monster. A 6-year-old gelding by Sharp Humor out of the Delineator mare Anotherbusride, Doctor J Dub was bred in New York by Dr. Pat Purdy, Edwin Edelberg, and Mara Edelberg.

He was making his Parx debut and is now six for 26 lifetime with six seconds and five thirds.
