California sire Northern Indy got his first winner on the racetrack Sept. 9 at Golden Gate Fields, where Remmah Racing's 2-year-old gelding West Coast Indy won a maiden claiming race to kick off the Friday card.
Under the guidance of jockey Juan Hernandez, West Coast Indy stalked early leader Lefty in the mile event on the Golden Gate synthetic main track, moved up three wide in the turn to take command and held to win by 1 1/2 lengths with a final time of 1:43.78.
It was the third start of the Blaine Wright trainee's career, following a sixth-place finish in his debut at Pleasanton in June and a fifth-place run at Emerald Downs in July.
West Coast Indy was bred in Washington by Keith Marks, out of the Crowning Storm mare Storming Slew. Northern Indy stands for $2,000 at Paradise Road Ranch in Lathrop, Calif.
