Jockey Zarella Ore was air-lifted from Calder Casino & Race Course after a spill in the sixth race Friday, June 27 at the Miami Gardens, Fla. track.
Calder general manager of racing John Marshall said the track was still gathering information on the injured rider. Marshall said Ore was responsive when she was air-lifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami.
Ore was riding Pop's Gem in the sixth race at Calder, a 5 1/2-furlong starter-optional claiming race for fillies and mares. The pair were racing along the rail in midstretch when Pop's Gem appeared to clip heels with another horse and both horse and rider tumbled to the ground.
After a steward's inquiry, second-place finisher Desirable Lady, with Jocelyne Gomez aboard, was disqualified and placed last for interference near midstretch. Chart notes say Desirable Lady drifted in near the eighth pole and caused a chain reaction that impeded several opponents.
Calder and the Jockeys' Guild are still gathering information on Ore's injuries.
In her eighth year of riding, a career that includes a four-year break, Ore has six wins from 58 mounts this year and purse earnings of $79,526.
