Super Derby Prelude winner Texas Chrome turned back in a month in the $400,000 Super Derby (gr. III) and bested grade III winners Dalmore and Mo Tom Sept. 10 at Louisiana Downs.
After stalking the pace set by Big Chief Racing's Dalmore through most of the 1 1/8-mile test, the Texas-bred Grasshopper colt owned by Keene Thoroughbreds made an inside move under jockey C.J. McMahon to put a head in front of Dalmore at the top of the stretch, then outdueled that rival to the wire to win by a head.
Dalmore set fractions of :24.59, :49.13, and 1:13.27 through six furlongs, but travelled three wide in the final turn, which allowed Texas Chrome to make his inside move.
The J. R. Caldwell-trained colt finished hit the wire in 1:49.87 to secure his sixth stakes win and first graded score.
The winner paid $6.20, $3, and $2.60 as the 2-1 third choice in the field of seven. Dalmore brought $3 and $2.40, while third-place finisher Whateverbodywants delivered $3.80 to show.
Mo Tom, favored at 8-5, raced in sixth for much of the Super Derby, made a wide move in the turn, and tired to finish fifth, 10 3/4 lengths behind the winner.
Texas Chrome was bred by Craig Upham, out of the Naevus mare Margarita Mistress, and has a 7-1-3 record from 12 starts and $602,462 in earnings.
