One of the most visually impressive winners of the Kentucky Downs meet showed off Sept. 10, when Sweeping Paddy—a full sister to Preakness (gr. I) runner-up Cherry Wine—took a mile event by 12 1/4 lengths.
Showing the toughness of the Ellis Park 2-year-old races, the juvenile filly was third there in her Aug. 13 debut on dirt, then sailed away from her competition under jockey Robby Albarado.
Like Cherry Wine, Sweeping Paddy is trained by Dale Romans and was bred and is owned by Frank Jones of Louisville, William Pacella of Chicago, and Frank Shoop of Lexington. She is by Paddy O'Prado out of C. S. Royce.
"You never expect them to win by (12 1/4), though I knew she was a very good horse," Romans said. "She does well on the dirt, too, but right now we'll leave her on the turf for a while."
Romans said the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (gr. IT) is the objective, but how she gets there remains to be determined.
"The Jessamine (gr. IIIT, Oct. 12 at Keeneland) is a little too close to the Breeders' Cup this year, so maybe something like the (Oct. 2) Miss Grillo (gr. IIIT at Belmont Park) in New York," he said.
