WinStar Farm went to $500,000 to acquire a More Than Ready colt as the first yearling to reach the half-million mark early during the Sept. 16 session of the Keeneland September yearling sale.
Consigned as Hip 696 by Mrs. And Mrs. Jody Huckabay’s Elm Tree Farm, the colt was bred in Kentucky by Pin Oak Stud. Second dam Sweet Eloise, a stakes-placed daughter of Sky Classic, produced stakes winners Don Dulce and Sweet Relish. Third dam is multiple grade I winner Ms. Eloise, a half sister to stakes winners Belle of Amherst and Belle Nuit.
“He’s very athletic,” said WinStar’s Elliott Walden, adding that the yearling was balanced. “He looks like the kind that will be able to go on both surfaces which is what we’re looking for.”
Walden said that More Than Ready, who stands at WinStar, was a big factor in his purchase of the colt.
“Obviously, More Than Ready is a great sire,” Walden said. “Not only has he done it for a long time, he’s had success in both hemispheres, which is incredible. I think he still has some really good crops, they’re getting better every year. He’s always been a great stallion.”
“The reserve was much less than that,” said consignor Jody Huckabay. “We bring them here to try to sell them. He’s a very nice horse. Everybody was on him. We’re very pleased. Book 2 has been very good to us (in the past).”
More Than Ready stood the 2016 season for $50,000. He boasts 10 group/graded stakes winners in 2016 including two group I winners in Australia. He currently ranks 20th on the general sire list.
