Winx Extends Win Streak to 11 in George Main

Australian supermare Winx cruised to an 11th straigth victory Sept. 17, rallying from near the back of the field in the George Main Stakes (Aus-I) and scoring by 1 1/4 lengths at Royal Randwick.

The 5-year-old mare's string of triumphs matches that of legendary Australian galloper Kingstown Town, set in the early 1980s.

"The dream continues," trainer Chris Waller told www.abc.net.au about Winx, a daughter of Street Cry, who earned a seventh group I win win to equal that of three-time Australian Horse of the Year Makybe Diva and a 15 overall win from 21 career starts. She boosted her lifetime bankroll past the $7 million mark and became only the fourth Australian-based mare to do so, joining Makybe Diva, Sunline, and Black Caviar.

The short-price favorite in the field of five, Winx was a bit slow to start and raced in fourth before effortlessly gliding three wide nearing the home turn. She moved into contention around the turn and edged past runner-up Hauraki at the 200-meter mark. Kentucky-bred group II winner It's Somewhat (Dynaformer—Sometime) was third, about three lengths behind his stablemate Hauraki. 

Under Hugh Bowman, Winx covered 1,600 meters (about one mile) in 1:36.18 on turf rated as good. She will next take aim at the Caulfield Stakes (Aus-I) Oct. 8 before attempting a repeat win in the W. S. Cox Plate (Aus-I), Australia's premier weight-for-age race, Oct. 22.

Winx ignited her victory skein when taking the Sunshine Coast Guineas (Aus-III) in May 2015, and later that year scored a dominant Cox Plate win from Criterion and U.S. grade I winner Highland Reel while lowering the course record at Moonee Valley.

Waller trains Winx for a partnership that includes Magic Bloodstock Racing, which bought her from Coolmore Stud, agent, for $230,000 ($241,569) at the 2013 Magic Millions Gold Coast yearling sale. Her dam is New Zealand multiple stakes winner Vegas Showgirl, a daughter of Al Akbar.
