Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin reappointed State Sen. Damon Thayer (R-Georgetown) to the Kentucky Equine Drug Research Council Sept. 22. Thayer, the Senate majority floor leader, will represent legislators and serve the council for a term expiring Aug. 1, 2020.

Thayer was first appointed to the EDRC in 2004 by Gov. Ernie Fletcher and reappointed twice by Gov. Steve Beshear.

The Kentucky Equine Drug Research Council was created to advise the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission on research and testing of equine drugs. By law, the council reviews testing research conducted at the University of Kentucky or conducted elsewhere with state funds.

Additionally, the council reviews and reports to the racing commission on drug research and testing research being conducted elsewhere; advises the racing commission and makes recommendations for establishing an effective drug regulatory policy for Kentucky racing; and reports to the General Assembly any needed changes regarding the regulation of drugs in horse racing in the state of Kentucky.

“As someone who has been involved with the Thoroughbred industry throughout my career, it is an honor to serve an additional term on this important council,” Thayer said in a release. “I am proud of what we have accomplished in my first three terms on the EDRC and appreciate Gov. Bevin for reappointing me.”
