While the weather offered up a perfect fall day in Saturday, Oct. 8, in Lexington, the power at Keeneland and in the surrounding area was out a couple of hours before the scheduled first post before it was restored at 11:57 a.m.
Track officials said the local power company, Kentucky Utilities, had worked on the problem. The power also was out at nearby Bluegrass Airport and some traffic lights were affected, requiring police officers to direct traffic for early arriving fans.
With five stakes on the card and perfect fall weather, a large crowd is expected. First post of the 10-race card is 1:05 p.m. EDT. The first post will be pushed back to 1:40 p.m. Later in the day NBC will have a national broadcast from Keeneland.
While some early arrivals already had entered Keeneland, the track was not allowing additional patrons to enter because of safety issues. Elevators, of course, are not working and many of the inside areas of the track are quite dark. Fans were allowed to enter when the power was restored.
Keeneland credited Kentucky Utilities with a quick response to restore power.
After the new first post, races will continue on their normal schedule through the day, with 35 minutes between posts.
