Trainer James Casey Earns 1,000th Victory

Description:

James Casey earned his 1,000th victory as a trainer Oct. 12 at Hollywood Casino Charles Town Races with Coach Casey, a 3-year-old gelding he owns and bred in West Virginia.

With jockey Antonio Lopez aboard, Coach Casey stalked early leader Let Freedom Ring into the first turn of a two-turn, 6 1/2-furlong allowance test, put a head in front in the backstretch, and held off a sustained challenge from Blazin Luck to win by a half-length.

Coach Casey is by Charitable Man, who stood at the Casey family's Taylor Mountain Farm in Charles Town before his death in June.

Casey's 1,000 wins have come in 5,634 starts, to go along with 856 seconds and 864 thirds, according to Equibase statistics. The conditioner has earned more than $17.3 million in purses during his training career.

In 2016 Casey has 49 victories from 196 starts through Oct. 13. That win total is the most he's tallied since 1994, when he won 58 races from 300 starts.
