Cinco Charlie takes the 2014 Bashford Manor Stakes

Cinco Charlie, a graded stakes-winning juvenile by Indian Charlie, has been retired from racing and will enter stud at B. Wayne Hughes' Spendthrift Farm in Kentucky.

"Cinco Charlie is a fast, precocious, and great-looking son of Indian Charlie,"  Spendthrift general manager Ned Toffey said. "We've seen the success of Uncle Mo  , and we are very high on Liaison   and the offspring we're seeing from him. It's a sire line with a lot of upside, and Cinco Charlie has won more stakes races than any Indian Charlie at stud."

Cinco Charlie will stand for $5,000 and will be offered as part of Spendthrift's Share The Upside program.

Campaigned by owners Bill and Corrine Heiligbrodt and trainer Steve Asmussen, Cinco Charlie was a leading 2-year-old of his crop, capturing his debut at Churchill Downs before winning the Bashford Manor Stakes (gr. III) in his second start. He went on to win four stakes races at four different racetracks as a juvenile.

Cinco Charlie carried that momentum into his 3-year-old season by stretching out to an 8 1/2-length victory in the one-mile Riley Allison Stakes at Sunland Park. He returned to Churchill to prove best in the William Walker Stakes over multiple grade II winner Blofeld, and then was nailed at the wire to finish runner-up in a top field of sophomore sprinters in the Woody Stephens Stakes (gr. II) at Belmont Park.

This year at 4, Cinco Charlie won the six-furlong Duncan Kenner Stakes at Fair Grounds. He retires with earnings of $608,920 from eight wins in 18 starts.

He hails from the stakes-placed Marquetry mare Ten Halos, a half sister to graded stakes winners My Pal Charlie, Bwana Charlie, and Bwana Bull.

Indian Charlie sired 81 total stakes winners, including seven grade I winners. He stood at Airdrie Stud before passing away in 2011.
