Beholder, Frosted Drill at Santa Anita

Spendthrift Farm's Beholder logged what will likely be the final breeze of her career Oct. 27, in preparation for what should be her final start in the Nov. 4 Breeders' Cup Distaff (gr. I).

With trainer Richard Mandella watching from the Santa Anita Park grandstand, the three-time champion started from the five-eighths pole under jockey Gary Stevens, scooted by workmate White Rock Lake on the inside in the stretch, and continued past the wire to log six furlongs in 1:14 2/5. Mandella had the daughter of Henny Hughes to the wire in 1:01.

"What we wanted—very nice. I said last week, that was the big work," Mandella said of Beholder's :59 1/5, five-furlong drill Oct. 20. "This was meant to be a tune-up. Looked really good."

Other Breeders' Cup workers during the second of three exercise sessions had to wait out a significant delay when Wahine Warrior collapsed in the clubhouse turn during a gallop out that followed a work.

Frosted was the headliner after the incident, and cruised through an easy half-mile in :48 flat. He joined California Chrome   (six furlongs, 1:12 1/5 at Los Alamitos Race Course) and Melatonin (five furlongs in :59 3/5 at Santa Anita) as workers for the Nov. 5 Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I). Nyquist is also scheduled to work in the final session at Santa Anita.

Other Breeders' Cup workers during the second session included What a View (Mile, five furlongs in 1:03 1/5), Big Score (Juvenile Turf, five furlongs in 1:00 2/5), and Gomo (Filly & Mare Sprint, six furlongs in 1:15 flat).
