The Grade 1, $500,000 United Nations Stakes at Monmouth Park not only promises to be one of the premier summer turf races this year, it also figures to be a great opportunity to cash a nice ticket or two. The race drew five graded stakes winners and a handful who have run internationally, including one horse - Main Sequence - making his U.S. racing debut.
If there is a buzz horse in this race, it’s the European shipper Side Glance. But don’t be mistaken, this horse hasn’t just raced in Europe, Side Glance has had his passport stamped more times than David Hasselhoff. In his 35-race career (8 wins and nearly $2.5-million in earnings), Side Glance has faced competition in Britain, Dubai, Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia. In his two starts in the U.S., he finished fourth in the Grade 1 Woodbine Mile back in 2011 and third in last year’s Grade 1 Arlington Million.
The horse who won the 2013 Arlington Million was Real Solution. He isn’t entered in this race but he’s undoubtedly been one of the top three turf horses in the U.S. this year, and the horse he beat in his last race in the Grade 1, 1 ¼-mile Manhattan Handicap – Kaigun – returns in the United Nations.
Considering how tough Real Solution has been of late, I really like how Kaigun came on late in that last race. He should also enjoy the added ground these horses will be asked to cover, going 1 3/8 miles.

A few other horses who jump out at me are probable pacesetter Twilight Eclipse, Belmont Gold Cup Invitational Stakes winner Charming Kitten and longshot Manchurian High.
While the recent records of Twilight Eclipse and Charming Kitten speak for themselves, I feel obligated to state my case for Manchurian High - a horse most people wouldn’t bet, not even with my money.
While the 6-year-old has seen better days, he’s remained competitive, albeit against softer competition. I’m especially intrigued by the placement of the horse in a $30,000 allowance race last time out by owner and trainer Lilli Kurtinecz, which came on the heels of the horse finishing third in a lower-level claiming race. Sure enough, Manchurian High won that race at odds of 20.40-to-1. If you look back at his career, he ran perhaps his best lifetime race going a comparable 1 ½-mile distance on the turf. He’s 11-for-18 in the money lifetime on the grass and stranger things have happened in a race like this.
If I were going to make a straight win bet on this race, it would probably be on Kaigun. He just seems to be in great form and could actually be improving, which is a scary thought for the rest of these. But on a $20 budget, I’ll try to spice things up with a few suggested wagers that could net you a larger payday than if you simply bet $20 on Kaigun to win.

Si hay un caballo del que se habla en esta carrera, es del Europeo Side Glance.
