Woodbine plays host on Sunday to the first leg of the Canadian Triple Crown — the 1 ¼ mile, $1-milllion Queen’s Plate. Catch it live on FOX Sports 1 as part of the United Nations broadcast beginning at 5 p.m. ET.
The Queen's Plate betting money probably will gravitate to We Miss Artie, a familiar name for those who followed the 2014 Kentucky Derby trail. The winner of the Spiral Stakes had an impressive showing North of the Border with his stealthy, stalking win in last month’s Plate Trial Stakes.
The Todd Pletcher-trained colt is a deserving morning-line favorite, but there’s value to be had in this deep field of 15. Artie had some difficulty navigating the traffic of a 19-horse field for the Kentucky Derby and he could run into the same predicament here.
Tower of Texas (12), Asserting Bear (4) and Matador (10) round out my top contenders, in addition to We Miss Artie. Matador has shown a newfound strength on the synthetic Polytrack surface at Woodbine, while Tower of Texas is my big-price play. I dig his closing potential. Asserting Bear is in great hands with Chantal Sutherland-Kruse aboard.
Coltimus Prime (2) closed out the 2013 campaign with much fanfare. After a few less-than-stellar outings during Kentucky Derby prep season, he looks to be rounding into form of late. A finish in the money at Woodbine in the Queen’s Plate could be another step in the right direction for him.
Why no love for the field’s only filly and second choice on the morning line, Lexie Lou (14)? Her preference is to sit on or near the pace, which should be swift. That probably will not suit her well at this distance.
