Cassatt, a grade III-winning daughter of Tapit , was bought by Craig Bernick with Elevage Bloodstock for $2.5 million during the Nov. 7 Fasig-Tipton November sale.
The gray/roan mare, offered by Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agency, is believed in foal to Curlin and is from the family of champion Dreaming of Anna and graded stakes winners Lewis Michael and Justenuffhumor. Cassatt won seven times in 14 starts and earned more than $714,000. Her victories included the grade III Monmouth Oaks.
"She was a filly that won a lot of races, and she won or she really didn’t hit the board, and when she was right she was a really good horse," said Bernick. "The pedigree is great, tons going on, Dreaming of Anna, I mean she’s got a chance to be a broodmare of the year… it’s just a great family."
He added that he thought the mare would sell between $2.5 million and $3 million and so he was happy to get her at $2.5 (million). Regarding who she might be bred back to next year, Bernick said they'll wait to see how her Curlin foal looks.
"I guess she’d have to go to Curlin, Medaglia d'Oro , War Front , maybe Uncle Mo ," he said. "She’ll stay here; her family is good on dirt and turf, Kitten’s Joy is in the family, so it’s an internationally recognized pedigree and very good racemare. Ee’re excited to have her."
