Mr. Jordan began his career in the fall of 2014 with three straight wins, including a pair of impressive open-length stakes victories at Gulfstream Park West. Subsequently a grade III winner, he will return to the South Florida track in the $100,000 Sunshine Millions Classic Preview Nov. 12.
The 1 1/16-mile Classic for 3-year-olds and older is one of seven stakes for Florida-breds worth $700,000 in purses that help comprise the 11-race Sunshine Millions Preview Day program. Sunshine Millions Day is set for Jan. 21 at Gulfstream Park, prior to the track hosting the 45th annual Eclipse Awards dinner and ceremony.
David Melin, Leon Ellman, and Laurie Plesa's Mr. Jordan enters the Classic off a 9 1/4-length victory in a mile and 70 yards open allowance Oct.17 at Parx Racing, his win since the Pegasus (gr. III)) in June of 2015.
"He's training good. His last race was a big effort," said trainer Eddie Plesa Jr. "He's coming off a decent summer campaign (in which) he was kind of compromised. He had a foot problem that wasn't fully resolved until his last three starts. We're glad to be back home in Florida and we're anxious to run in the race. He's shown he can handle the surface over there and we're hoping it'll be a nice Saturday for us."
Mr. Jordan cruised to wins in the Juvenile Sprint Preview and Smooth Air Stakes as a 2-year-old at Gulfstream Park West and, after a pair of runner-up stakes finishes during Gulfstream's winter meet, won the Pegasus at Monmouth Park before taking on 2015 Triple Crown champion American Pharoah in the William Hill Haskell Invitational Stakes (gr. I), where he finished seventh.
The Haskell and Hal's Hope (gr. III) in January at Gulfstream marked the only off-the-board finishes from 16 starts for Mr. Jordan, a 4-year-old Kantharos gelding whose $453,595 in purse earnings are the most in the Classic field.
Mar Racing Stable's Hy Riverside finished second by a neck in his only previous stakes try, the seven-furlong Trinniberg July 30 at Gulfstream, his only loss in the past four starts. He takes a two-race win streak into the Classic for trainer Antonio Sano.
Hy Riverside, a gelded 4-year-old son of Macho Uno , raced twice at Gulfstream Park West last fall, breaking his maiden Nov. 20, and is unraced since taking a one-mile optional claiming allowance Aug. 25 at Gulfstream. He has finished worse than third three times from 12 lifetime starts, primarily at sprint distances.
"He is a very good horse," said Sano, the leading trainer at the current fall meet with 14 wins. "The horse is in excellent condition and he is a good fit for the race. He is doing very well. There wasn't a race for him before this one, but I think the race will be very good for him and I am hoping that he can win."
Trainer Todd Pletcher entered Double Diamond Farm's J S Bach, winless in six starts since kicking off his career with four consecutive wins, including a triumph over older horses in an open entry-level optional claiming allowance going one mile at Gulfstream Park West last October.
J S Bach stretches out off a pair of sprints, most recently finishing third in a six-furlong optional claiming allowance Oct. 12 at Gulfstream Park West.
Rounding out the field are defending Classic Preview winner Saraguaro, winless in four starts this year; Norman's Hero, a winner of three straight, including the last two since being claimed by trainer Ramon Moya; Piloting, a last-out allowance winner Oct.16 at Gulfstream Park West; stakes-placed Aces for John, fourth in last year's Classic Preview; and 6-year-old gelding Joshua's Comprise.
