Phipps Mares Prove Popular at Keeneland

As one might expect, mares offered as part of a Phipps Stable reduction in the opening Book 2 catalog of the Keeneland November breeding stock sale Thursday proved to be hot commodities. The horses are being sold through the Hancock family's Claiborne Farm, agent.

Breeders' Cup Distaff (gr. I) winner Pleasant Home brought $530,000 from agent R. J. Bennett for Charles Fipke. The reduction lit up the board again later in the day when Gasparilla Inn, a winning daughter of Street Cry believed pregnant to Super Saver  , was purchased for $500,000 by Shimokobe Farm and Polo Green Stable. Gasparilla Inn is out of grade II winner Boca Grande, by A.P. Indy.

The fillies or mares from the reduction were all scheduled to be offered during Thursday's session. The nine that went through the ring Thursday sold, bringing a total of $2,592,000. Vagabond (Hip 653) was an out. 

Sea Island, a 7-year-old daughter of Pulpit and also part of the Phipps Stable reduction, sold for $480,000 during the first Book 2 session of Keeneland’s November breeding stock sale. The ticket was signed by Elliott Walden, president and chief executive officer of WinStar Farm.

The reduction is headed by Daisy Phipps Pulito, daughter of Ogden Mills Phipps. Ogden Phipps, former chairman of The Jockey Club, died in April.

“I sat down with Seth (Hancock), Bernie (Sams), and Walker (Seth’s son), and went through what we had in training and what we might be having come off the track in the next few years," Daisy Phipps Pulito said. "We’ve always sold some horses privately, but this year decided to wait until the November sale and hold a kind of mini-dispersal.”

Sea Island made 18 starts for Phipps Stable and trainer Shug McGaughey, winning three times and placing in five stakes, including the 2012 Gazelle (gr. I) and the 2013 Allaire DuPont Distaff (gr. III).

Her 2015 foal, by Kitten's Joy  , died as a weanling. She was sold in foal to Hard Spun  .

“We are excited to have her,” Walden said. “We might breed her to Pioneerof the Nile  , but we’ll see. The last mare we bought from Mr. Phipps was Supercharger.”

Supercharger, by A.P. Indy, produced WinStar’s Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) winner and sire Super Saver  , and graded winners Brethern and Cyrus Alexander.

Satisfaction, a 6-year-old Awesome Again   mare in foal to Point of Entry  , sold for $310,000 to Roger Long.

Three-year-old broodmare prospect Secret Agenda, by Malibu Moon  , brought $187,000 from Stone Farm. Secret Agenda is out of champion Smuggler and her second dam is champion and Breeders’ Cup Distaff winner Inside Information.

Calumet Farm went to $120,000 to purchase Siesta Time, a 3-year-old broodmare prospect by Tapit  . The unraced Siesta Time’s second dam is grade II winner and grade I producer Daydreaming, a full sister to Girolamo   and Accelerator.

Complicated, a placed 4-year-old daugther of Blame  , brought $110,000.
