The California Horse Racing Board sent out a reminder to licensees Dec. 2 that key aspects of medication rules will be changing Jan. 1.
One of the most significant changes coming in 2017 to CHRB Rule 1843.3 is about horses transferred from trainers who are serving a suspension for medication violations.
According to the document sent out by the CHRB, "A trainer suspended for over 30 days for a medication violation will no longer be able to transfer horses to anyone who has been employed by the trainer in the previous year. Transfers to family members already are prohibited."
The common practice of trainers transferring horses to assistants during those medication suspensions will not be allowed, according to the rule change.
