Pure Sensation a Non-Runner for HK Sprint

Pure Sensation, the only American entry in the Dec. 11 Longines Hong Kong International Races, returned to the Sha Tin all-weather track for a light jog Dec. 10 but was later declared a non-runner for Sunday's Longines Hong Kong Sprint (HK-I).

 

The 5-year-old Zensational gelding, owned by Patricia Generazio and trained by Christophe Clement, was reported lame in both his left rear and left fore in the days leading up to the race. The Hong Kong Jockey Club stewards said a routine examination after the Saturday work found that, "whilst the horse has improved, it remains lame in the left front foot."

According to a later release, the stewards were advised by Dr. Peter Curl, executive manager of veterinary regulation, that Pure Sensation was found to still be lame in the left front foot.

"Dr. Curl advised that following light work this morning the horse was found to be lame in the left front foot and is not suitable to race," read a statement from the Hong Kong Jockey Club. "Accordingly, Pure Sensation has been withdrawn from the Longines Hong Kong Sprint to be conducted later today." 

 

Pure Sensation, third in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (gr. IT) at Santa Anita Park, was absent from trackwork at Sha Tin Dec. 8-9. Saturday's appearance was limited to a slow lap around the track, showing no obvious signs of favoring his left side, and a quick return to the quarantine barn.

 

In Hong Kong terminology and procedures, "lameness" can mean anything from a minor bruise to a significant injury. In the local climate of extreme transparency, even minor issues routinely are reported publicly and tracked closely by officials and racing fans.

 

Trainers are given every opportunity, even up to the morning of a race, to deal with issues and bring their horse up to health and safety standards.

 

Pure Sensation also reportedly had difficulty negotiating right-handed turns during trackwork early in the week.
