Hurricane Run
Hurricane Run, winner of the 2005 Lucien Barriere Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (Fr-I) and Cartier Horse of the Year, has died at the age of 14.
According to a statement provided to Racing Post by Germany's Ammerland Stud, which bred and stood Hurricane Run, the son of Montjeu passed away due to complications during a planned routine operation the morning of Dec. 14.
Trained by Andre Fabre and owned by Michael Tabor, Hurricane Run put forth a brilliant season at age 3, winning five of six starts with his lone defeat coming when he ran second in the Prix du Jockey Club-French Derby (Fr-I). The bay horse came out of that loss and went on to score his first group I triumph next time out in the Budweiser Irish Derby (Ire-I) before capping off his championship season with his Arc triumph.
Hurricane Run was slated to contest the 2005 John Deere Breeders' Cup Turf (gr. IT) at Belmont Park that October but was scratched out of the race due to a cough.

His top-level form would hold into his 4-year-old season, notching wins in the Tattersalles Gold Cup (Ire-I) and King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes (Eng-I) before closing out his career with a sixth-place finish in the 2006 Breeders' Cup Turf.
Hurricane Run retired with eight wins from 14 career starts and $4,300,351 in earnings. He originally began his stud career at Coolmore Stud in Ireland before shifting to Ammerland Stud in 2013.
Hurricane Run has sired three champions and 14 graded/group stakes winners including Ectot, winner of this year's Joe Hirsch Turf Classic (gr. IT) at Belmont Park. He has 31 stakes winners from seven crops of racing age with progeny earnings of $15,299,005.
