California Diamond wins the Golden State Juvenile

California Diamond will stretch out to a mile for the first time as he aims for his fifth stakes win of 2016 in the $100,000 King Glorious Stakes Dec. 18 at Los Alamitos Race Course.

The King Glorious is restricted to 2-year-olds bred or sired in California and is the main event on closing day of Los Alamitos' winter meet.

Trained by Peter Miller for Gary Hartunian's Rockingham Ranch, California Diamond won his only previous start at Los Alamitos, in the Barretts Juvenile Sept. 18.

The Barretts Juvenile was the second of the Harbor the Gold colt's stakes successes, following the Santa Anita Juvenile and preceding the Speakeasy and Golden State Juvenile.

Out of the Slewdledo mare Carrie's a Jewel, California Diamond has not finished worse than second in eight starts, with five wins. In his most recent start in the Bob Hope (gr. III) Nov. 19 at Del Mar, the dark bay was runner-up to undefeated Mastery, who returned to win the Los Alamitos CashCall Futurity (gr. I) Dec. 10.

California Diamond, who has earned $397,780, has three wins in six starts since being purchased for $125,000 by his current connections at the Del Mar paddock sale of horses of racing age July 25.

Trainer Doug O'Neill, who won the King Glorious a year ago with Found Money, will be represented Sunday by Ann Arbor Eddie and Milton Freewater.

Owned and bred by Reddam Racing, Ann Arbor Eddie, a son of Square Eddie and the In Excess mare Repo, finished third in the Bob Hope, 1 1/2 lengths behind California Diamond.

This followed an impressive debut victory Oct. 29 at Santa Anita Park by the gelding, who won by 4 1/4 lengths as the 6-5 favorite.

A Creative Cause   colt out of the Swiss Yodeler mare Lovehi, Milton Freewater returns to the scene of his debut score. The gray won by a nose as the 1-2 choice when trained by co-breeder and former co-owner Patricia Harrington and was privately purchased by O'Neill for a partnership that includes Kramer Racing, Sheep Pond Partners, Royce Jaime, and Steve Keh.

Calli Way upset maidens on turf when 11-1 in his initiation at the King Glorious distance Nov. 18. Trained by Tim Yakteen for Paymaster Racing, the Unusual Heat colt out of the Great Above mare Way Up won by a head. He is the only member of the field with a race around two turns.
