Value is always a prerequisite in handicapping.
In the long run, it’s best to stay away from horses that are bet well beyond their chances of winning. What that means is that if you believe a horse’s fair odds should be 4-1 and it is 9-5 on the tote board, it would be wise to turn the page and start handicapping the next race.
Conversely, if you believe that same horse with fair odds of 4-1 is 10-1 then you should consider increasing your wager.
