Paladin Bay Seeks to Tame Bison City Stakes

The experienced Paladin Bay heads a field of six sophomore Canadian-bred fillies that will tangle in the $250,000 Bison City Stakes, the second jewel of the Canadian Triple Crown for fillies at Woodbine July 13. All will carry 121 pounds.
Two starts back, the Sligo Bay filly won the Selene Stakes (Can-III) at Woodbine at the same 1 1/16-mile distance at which the Bison City will be run. Paladin Bay also prevailed in the Ontario Lassie Stakes and the Princess Elizabeth Stakes last season at Woodbine, where she has made all of her 12 lifetime starts. The four-time winner has earned $560,397.
Paladin Bay comes off a fourth-place finish as the 2-1 favorite in the series opener, the Woodbine Oaks, Presented by Budweiser June 15. Flattening out after chasing the pace into the stretch, she finished 8 1/2 lengths behind Lexie Lou, who returned to win the prestigious Queen's Plate over males July 6.
Wild Catomine, from the John Oxley/Mark Casse team that has been excelling, won the Fury Stakes at Woodbine May 10 and returned to run second in the Woodbine Oaks, beaten 4 1/2 lengths. The Milwaukee Brew filly has won two of three starts and $223,406.
Three others in the Bison City are exiting the Woodbine Oaks, although none distinguished themselves in that event. Unspurned, who finished second in the Mazarine Stakes (Can-III) last October and third in the Princess Elizabeth, won an allowance contest by daylight to start her 2014 campaign before finishing fifth, beaten 10 1/4 lengths, in the Woodbine Oaks. The Lemon Drop Kid filly has been training forwardly for the Bison City.
Hot and Spicy is the only filly in the Bison City to have started somewhere other than Woodbine. She began her career at Gulfstream Park in March, winning a maiden allowance contest. Shipped to Woodbine after that, she finished second to Wild Catomine in the Fury and then seventh in the Woodbine Oaks for New York-based trainer H. James Bond.
Call Her Karma won her maiden by eight lengths in May before running eighth in the Woodbine Oaks.
Impeccably-bred My Heart's Love (A.P. Indy--Mo Cuishle, by Saint Ballado) is another from Oxley and Casse. She is a maiden after two starts, the most recent a narrow defeat finishing second at the 8 1/2 -furlong distance of the Bison City.
