Multiple Group I Winner The Fugue Retired

Lord Lloyd-Webber's The Fugue, a four-time group I stakes winner, has been retired, trainer John Gosden said.

The Racing Post reported July 11 the 5-year-old mare, bred in Great Britain by her owner under the name Watership Down Stud, will return to the farm. Gosden told the newspaper The Fugue was injured during the running of the July 5 Coral-Eclipse Stakes (Eng-I), in which she finished sixth.

"Unfortunately The Fugue sustained an injury to her near fore in the Eclipse Stakes," Gosden told the newspaper. "Having discussed the matter with Andrew and Madeleine Lloyd-Webber, we have taken the decision, in the best interests of the filly, to retire her from racing. The Fugue has been a pleasure to train and to be around for all of us here, and she never ceased to amaze us with her courage and athletic ability."

The Fugue collected six wins, four seconds, and three thirds in 17 starts for earnings of $3,125,860. In two trips to the United States, she finished third in the 2012 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (gr. IT) and second in the 2013 Breeders' Cup Turf (gr. IT). Both races were held at Santa Anita Park.
