Six Things to Do in San Diego During Del Mar

As high-class racing takes place at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, here's a list of some of the things to do in the San Diego area. Whether you’re here for a day, a week, or the entire meet, there’s plenty of things to to fill your time when you're not at the track.
1. Visit Downtown’s Historic Gaslamp Quarter
Gaslamp Quarter is located in downtown San Diego and offers shops, restaurants, nightclubs, pubs, museums, art galleries, rooftop bars and much more. It’s a great area to take a walk and enjoy a vibrant nightlife.
2. Hit the Beach
San Diego has over 70 miles of beaches and great weather throughout the year. Some of the most popular beaches are Mission Bay, Coronado State, La Jolla Shores, and Pacific Beach. If you’re staying close to the race track, the ocean is only a short walk away from the grandstand—I’ve made that walk a few times. Del Mar’s post time of 2 p.m. (4 p.m. on Fridays) gives you plenty of time to catch some waves before heading out to the track.
3. Golf
If you like to play golf, you will love San Diego. There are more than 90 golf courses for you to choose from. Whether you’re a regular player or a beginner wanting to take some lessons, there is something for everyone. The world-class Torrey Pines course (pictured) is only 5 miles away from the race track.
4. San Diego Bay
The San Diego Bay is only about a 30 minute drive from the race track and it is home to shops, attractions, restaurants, fishing, the USS Midway Museum and much more. There’s something for the entire family. Get all your info here.
5. Theme Parks
I have to say that the San Diego Zoo & Safari Park is one of my favorite places in San Diego. The zoo is open late during the summer months and is one of the world’s most famous parks. Other nearby attractions include Legoland and SeaWorld. For more attractions check out SanDiego.org
6. Good Eats and Good Drinks
There’s no shortage of good places to have a tasty bite and refreshing beverage around town. Here are some of my favorites that are close to the race track: good burgers at Chiefs Burgers and Brews (pictured), the popular fish tacos at The Brig which offers a view of the Del Mar track, baja-style Mexican food at Las Olas or a tad more authentic Mexican bite at Tony’s Jacal, and for a more elegant dining experience visit The Pamplemousse Grille. Also check out Jimmy O’s and Bully’s which are located near the Camino Del Mar and 15th Street intersection.
With a metro population of more than three million people, this is only a taste of all there is to see and do in San Diego & Del Mar. I hope to see you out at the races there this summer!
