Mentor Cane Fatally Injured in Morning Work

Mentor Cane, second in the grade I Foxwoods King's Bishop Stakes Aug. 24 at Saratoga Race Course, was euthanized on Sept. 12 following an injury he incurred during a morning workout.

 

The 3-year-old suffered a right-hind lateral condylar fracture and a comminuted right-hind P1 fracture, according to Dr. Anthony Verderosa, chief examining veterinarian for the New York Racing Association.

 

Trained by John Shirreffs and a homebred for owners Jerry and Ann Moss, Mentor Cane was a colt by Mizzen Mast   out of Vixana. He posted a five-length maiden victory July 6 at Belmont Park in his third start. He was fourth in the Amsterdam Stakes (gr. II) July 28 at Saratoga prior to the Foxwoods King's Bishop.
