This year’s running of the Eddie Read brings us a rematch of Summer Front and Tom’s Tribute. These two runners were last seen finishing second and third, respectively, in the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile at Santa Anita behind Obviously. They'll square off again Saturday in the Grade 1 feature at Del Mar.
This compact field of six might not provide much value given that I think it’s a race that will be won by one of those two favorites but there is one horse that I think can get in the exacta and it’s Horizontalyspeakin for trainer John Sadler. There is not a lot of speed in this group of runners and some of Horizontalyspeakin’s best efforts have been when he’s been able to get away with the lead at a comfortable pace.
My pick to win is Tom’s Tribute. He can lay closer to the pack and doesn’t need to be too far back early to set up his closing kick. Tom’s Tribute has four career wins and all of those wins have been with jockey Mike Smith riding.
My play with a $20 budget is a $10 exacta with Tom’s Tribute (6) on top with Horizontalyspeakin (4) and Summer Front (2) underneath.
My bet:
$10 Exacta: 6 with 2,4 (Total $20)
