Barretts Race Meet at Fairplex Sets Stakes

Barretts Race Meet at Fairplex begins its 75th season Sept. 6 and will run through Sept. 22 during the Los Angeles County Fair in Pomona, Calif.



The race meet, formerly known as Fairplex Park, brings 13 days of live Thoroughbred horse racing, featuring 12 stakes races and $775,000 in purses. In addition to Barretts Race Meet's three $100,000 guaranteed races, the Governor's Cup was raised $25,000 to $75,000. Barretts also increased overnight purses 5% from 2012.
   

The racing season opens Sept. 6 with the Beverly J. Lewis Stakes at 6 1/2 furlongs with a guaranteed purse of $50,000. Barretts graduates will be spotlighted Sept. 14 in the Barretts Debutante and Sept. 15 with the Barretts Juvenile. Both are at 6 1/2 furlongs with $100,000 guaranteed purses. 

   

Other stakes also running at 6 1/2 furlongs include the Jim Kostoff Sept. 8, the Governor's Cup Sept. 18, with a $75,000 guaranteed purse, and the Bangles and Beads Sept. 20.



The C.B. Afflerbaugh Stakes is a seven-furlong contest Sept. 11 for  2-year-olds; also at seven furlongs, the Phil D. Shepherd Stakes, for 2-year-old fillies, is Sept. 13. Scheduled for 1 1/16 miles Sept. 7 is the E.B. Johnston Stakes for California-breds, 3-year-olds and upward. The Las Madrinas Handicap and Pomona Derby are Sept. 21. The meet's signature race,  the $100,000 guaranteed Ralph M. Hinds Pomona Handicap at a1 1/8 miles is closing day, Sept. 22.
       

First post Thursday to Sunday is 1 p.m. Twilight racing, introduced in 2011, proved so popular it returns with a first post of 4 p.m. Wednesdays. There is no racing Mondays and Tuesdays.
