Hip 6, a Lucky Pulpit filly, clocked an eighth-mile in :09 4/5

A filly by Lucky Pulpit   and a colt by Justin Phillip   recorded the fastest times back to back at the Barretts under tack preview at Del Mar March 27.

The filly worked a furlong in :09 4/5, followed by the colt who worked a quarter-mile in :20 3/5, in preparation for the Barretts select 2-year-old sale March 29.

"We had a wonderful breeze show," said Kim Lloyd, general manager of Barretts. "I was very pleased with the turnout and very pleased with the performance of the horses."

Bred by The Cole Ranch in California, the filly who breezed in :09 4/5 is the only horse in the catalog by the late Lucky Pulpit, sire of two-time Horse of the Year California Chrome  . Andy Havens' Havens Bloodstock Agency consigned the youngster as Hip 6.

Now named Californiabyanose, the filly is out of the Mr. Greeley mare Nine to Five Lady, from the family of Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) winner Concern. Californiabyanose sold for $42,000 to John Brocklebank, as agent, at last year's Barretts October sale.

The colt who turned in the :20 3/5 quarter-mile was initially one of two by Justin Phillip in the catalog. However, the other was withdrawn. Highland Yard bred the colt in Kentucky.

Eddie Woods consigned the colt as Hip 48, who sold for $80,000 to Cinco de Mayo Stables at the 2016 Keeneland September yearling sale and to Equest Thoroughbreds as a weanling for $45,000 at the 2015 Keeneland November sale. The colt is out of the Speightstown   mare Town Belle, a daughter of $504,532-earner Clearly a Queen.

Thirteen of the 70 2-year-olds that previewed completed a quarter-mile, while the rest worked an eighth-mile. Of those previewing at a furlong, 10 clocked it in :10 flat.

The next-fastest quarter-mile was :21, posted by a son of Malibu Moon  . Willy North's Starting Point Thoroughbreds consigned the colt, Hip 109. The youngster, bred by William Peeples in Kentucky, is out of the stakes-winning Indian Charlie mare Indian Breeze. He sold for $135,000 at last year's Keeneland September yearling sale.

The Barretts March 2-year-old sale is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.PDT March 29 at Del Mar.
