Although he is confident Joe Turner's undefeated Sircat Sally can run on either turf or dirt, trainer Jerry Hollendorfer is keeping the homebred Surf Cat filly on the grass April 8 in the $150,000 Providencia Stakes (G3T) at Santa Anita Park.
The Hall of Fame conditioner said the presence of stablemate It Tiz Well in the Santa Anita Oaks (G1) Saturday factored into his decision regarding which race Sircat Sally would run in, but expressed his confidence in her on both surfaces.
"There's no doubt (she can run on both)," Hollendorfer said. "She's versatile and she's eligible for a lot of different races."
Sircat Sally went from likely favorite to commanding odds-on choice with the scratch of grade 1 winner Union Strike, who was scheduled to make her first start on turf after winning the Del Mar Debutante (G1) and running off the board in the 14 Hands Winery Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) and Starlet (G1) in 2016.
The remaining field includes Beau Recall, who came in second behind Sircat Sally last time out in the China Doll Stakes on the Santa Anita turf March 11. Before that effort, Sircat Sally won the California Cup Oaks in her turf debut Jan. 28, and during her juvenile season she won the Soviet Problems Stakes on dirt at Los Alamitos Race Course.
Also in the field is recent Cal-bred allowance winner Princess Roi, who finished third in the Cal Cup Oaks; German stakes winner Tiburtina, who ran eighth Nov. 26 in the Jimmy Durante (G3T), her only U.S. start; Golden Gate Fields resident War Moccasin, who has won twice on synthetic and ran second in her only turf start; and East Coast shipper Emphatically, who enters the race off back-to-back wins at Laurel Park and Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots.
