Classic Empire Puts in Final Move for Arkansas Derby

John Oxley's reigning juvenile champion Classic Empire turned in his final serious drill in advance of his expected run in the $1 million Arkansas Derby (G1), breezing an easy half-mile in :50 at Winding Oaks Farm in Ocala the morning of April 8.

In his fourth move since shifting from Palm Meadows Training Center—where he twice refused to break off for workouts—to Winding Oaks, the son of Pioneerof the Nile   stayed on relatively even terms with his workmate throughout. Trainer Mark Casse called the colt's final move "easy" by design, and confirmed his charge was slated to ship to Oaklawn Park April 12 for the April 15 Arkansas Derby.

"He was just out for a nice gallop—did everything perfect," Casse said between races at Keeneland Saturday afternoon. "After last week (five furlongs in :59 3/5), I said not to expect anything, and that's what he did. He went nice and easy."

Classic Empire has tested his connections this winter and spring, with a series of minor setbacks that have threatened his preparation for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1), the first being a foot abscess discovered days after his third-place finish in the Feb. 4 Lambholm South Holy Bull Stakes (G2).

After a couple of aborted works and a minor back issue, Casse thought Classic Empire would respond to the change of scenery at Winding Oaks, and has been pleased with what he has seen from his charge in recent weeks.

"I mean, I feel like we're ready now," Casse said. "He's made it a bit of a challenge, but I'm happy. I think he's in a good place now."

Bred by Steven Nicholson and Brandi Nicholson, Classic Empire captured the Claiborne Breeders' Futurity (G1) and Sentient Jet Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) last season en route to be voted champion 2-year-old male of 2016.
